My last wedding for 2009 was beautiful. It wasn’t flashy or expensive, nor was it filled with the rich and famous, it was simply a down to earth celebration of love. Love and family. Ingrid and Nathan met through a Church Mission, their attraction to each other was overwhelming and soon love blossomed. Ingrid and Nathan are two very sweet, kind and beautiful souls who’s love and dedication to each other is so strong you can see it a mile away. When Ingrid met Nathan’s family for the first time they knew that she as the woman for him and they welcomed her into their family with open arms.
I shoot a lot of weddings and I always enjoy sharing the day with my clients, but this time I felt like I was witnessing something sacred, something from a time long since passed. Ingrid’s family wear their hearts on their sleeves, they adore one another and express their love so beautifully. When I asked Ingrid’s parents to have their photos taken with her before she became a wife I could tell that this was going to be an emotional wedding. Ingrid’s father started to tear up immediately, he knew his little girl was about to embark on the biggest journey of her life and he was both proud and sad.
During the ceremony while the congregation sang the hymn “Rock of Ages” the emotion and intensity of the day became too much for Ingrid’s father, he openly wept breathing heavy sobs at the thought of his baby girl leaving home for good. It’s these moments that I love and cherish as a photographer, being able to witness and document the love, joy and sadness of an occasion makes me feel like I am doing far more than simply taking photographs, I’m capturing the emotion of the day that will be as raw today as it is in 50 or 100 years.
Here are my favourite raw, emotional and real moments of Ingrid’s and Nathan’s Day.
